Casa Albaredo: A Mountain Refuge Reborn
Casa Albaredo: A Mountain Refuge Reborn

Inside the Quiet Alchemy of Casa Albaredo

Hidden high in the Galician mountains of Spain, among moss-covered stones and whispering trees, lies Casa Albaredo—a place that feels less like a house and more like a memory. When Petra first came across the ruin during a solo journey in her caravan, it was almost entirely reclaimed by nature. The structure had been forgotten, its stones softened by weather and time, wrapped in a hush that felt both ancient and enchanted.

But for Petra, this quiet ruin wasn’t an ending—it was a beginning. “I had dreamed of creating a retreat,” she recalls. “When I stood before those walls, I just knew—this was it.” What followed was a slow, intuitive restoration that honored the past while gently coaxing the space into the present.

From the outset, Petra’s vision for Casa Albaredo was clear: a place of stillness, authenticity, and elemental beauty. She wanted to craft a sanctuary where visitors could reconnect—not only with nature, but with themselves. It wouldn’t be flashy or overly styled. Instead, it would feel grounded and real, built from materials that carried the same quiet strength as the landscape around them.

Among those materials was MAS MAYA—a discovery Petra made late one evening on Instagram. “I was drawn to the texture instantly,” she says. “I wanted something that felt raw and clay-like. MAS MAYA struck the perfect balance—earthy, honest, and practical.”

Petra selected a sand-toned finish that subtly echoes the color of the surrounding stone and soil. Inside the house, MAS MAYA’s plastered surfaces blend seamlessly with exposed wooden beams, natural linens, and the original stone walls. “It doesn’t shout,” she explains. “It becomes part of the house. You feel it more than you see it.”

The application process was not without its challenges. Working without a formal guide in a high-altitude, humid environment required patience—and experimentation. Petra and her team discovered that allowing the material to dry slightly before applying made a significant difference. “It was a learning curve,” she admits. “But once we found the rhythm, it became almost meditative.”

Even the imperfections that emerged—slight cracking in corners, the faint impressions of underlying structures—felt welcome. Rather than flaws, Petra sees them as expressions of the house’s life and evolution. “The beauty lies in the irregularities,” she says. “They remind you the space is living.”

Throughout the project, Petra found MAS MAYA’s team deeply aligned with her values. “Their support was exceptional,” she says. “There was real care—not just in service, but in the philosophy behind the brand. It’s authentic. Thoughtful. That matters.”

Today, Casa Albaredo feels like a pause button on the outside world. It’s a place where light shifts gently across plastered walls, where quiet reigns, and where every detail—from the linen-draped windows to the custom-designed sofa—has been chosen with intention. The overall effect is one of harmony, warmth, and presence.

Guests who visit describe it as peaceful, restorative. “There’s an energy to the house,” Petra says. “It holds people.” That energy is particularly strong in the main hall and dining area—her personal favorite space—where the communal spirit of the home comes alive.

But Casa Albaredo is just the beginning. A café and bar are in development, and Petra is already dreaming up her private residence on the same land. MAS MAYA will return in both spaces. “It’s become a part of my design language,”she says.

For Petra, the greatest lesson of the journey wasn’t about materials or floor

plans. It was about surrender. “Things take time. Not everything will go as planned—and that’s okay,” she reflects. “The most beautiful moments are often the ones you didn’t control.”

At Casa Albaredo, nothing feels forced. Nothing feels rushed. Every corner breathes. And in the stillness of those plastered walls, there’s a kind of quiet alchemy—an invitation to simply be.
